Summary: Eddie knew he loved Buck, but it wasn’t until after he was shot, Eddie realized how deep that love goes. Problem is, Buck loves Taylor, so unable to bear having Buck push him and Christopher out of his life, the Diazes leave Los Angeles.
The two men continued to sit in silence with their hands entwined, sipping beer. Eddie knew that if they were going to have any kind of future, either as friends or more, one of them was going to have to break out of their comfort zone. He took a breath and held it, forcing his muscles to relax on the exhale.
“When I was laying in the hospital after I was shot, I decided I needed to do some re-prioritizing. Christopher was first, always. Then I went down the list of people I knew and their place in my life. There next to Christopher was you. Every time I opened my eyes from the time I was lying in the street until I woke up from surgery … You were there.”
Pausing long enough to pull two bottles of water from the mini-fridge, Eddie sat down beside Buck before opening his bottle.
“Then Ana was there always hovering, clinging, and making Christopher feel small. I finally told her it wasn’t going to work between us and to lose my number. I think Christopher felt as much relief over that as I did. I was back on the job and things were back to normal, we were back in rhythm, and all was right with the world. I was ready to take the next step. Bobby and Athena had a party and I thought it was the perfect place to ask you out. I’m excited about it because it feels right. Athena opens the door, and you walk through, so I’m moving to the bottom of the steps waiting … And you introduce Athena to your girlfriend, Taylor Kelly. I just knew that I didn’t stand a chance against her. So, instead of standing at the bottom of the stairs staring at you like a lovestruck idiot, I found a quiet corner of the backyard to shove my feelings in a box and pulled out Best Friend Eddie. Later, Taylor let me know in that snotty little way of hers that she held the leash on your dick, and I was only welcome in your work life. She didn’t count on you being so stubborn about Christopher. I imagine she made little digs about how you didn’t have time for her because you spent so much time on a child that wasn’t yours. I never told her he was your kid, too.”
Turning his head enough to see Eddie’s face out of the corner of his eye, Buck saw the tears flowing down his cheeks.
“Eddie, you don’t have to do this.” Buck felt his tears dampening the anger that flared at how Taylor had manipulated them.
“I do. We do. I want to go forward, but you keep dragging us into the past. This is me closing the book on Taylor Kelly. I only talk to Aaron professionally on an as needed basis. I want to keep it that way. So, I’m lancing this wound to drain the infection and let it heal.”
“It’s hurting you.”
“Is it helping you?”
“Yes, but I don’t want to cause you pain.”
“Not the first time, Evan. I’ll live. I’m almost done. I’ll either need a stiff drink or a nap.” Eddie’s chuckle was a little watery.
“I have nowhere else I want to be.”
“I have training tonight at seven, so nap it is.”
This time it was Buck that retrieved water from the mini-fridge. “You’re going to need to restock that, soon.” Buck grabbed Eddie’s hand after he wiped his face on the tail of his t-shirt. “It’s not fair. You’re already hot, it’d be nice if you were like the rest of us and cried ugly.” He teased trying to lighten the mood. Even the sun had gone behind the one cloud in the sky.
“Thankfully, I got my complexion from my Mexican half instead of my Swedish half.”
He took a minute to breathe and calm his emotions. “It’s almost finished.” He took another drink then set the bottle aside. “Once you proposed, Taylor stepped up her game to cut you away from Christopher and me. I admit, she was good with her work dinners and wedding plans to occupy your time, but I wasn’t fighting against it. You were happy and that’s all I ever wanted … For you to be happy. You were making your own family instead of having to make do with mine.”
“Eddie, no! I love your family. All the Diaz clan has been so welcoming and liked me for who I am, and never tried to change me. They have the annoying habit of always talking about you and Christopher all the time …”
“They’re just the opposite when they talk to me about Evanito when I would call them. Let me get through this. I knew I couldn’t spend the rest of my life watching you play happy couple with Taylor, so after you asked me to be your best man, I started looking for a way out. I explored transferring to another station, transferring to County, or SAR, but we would still be here, still socializing with the 118, the whole shooting match. I decided to look out of state. Christopher had an appointment with the head of his care team. We were discussing puberty and growth spurts, which would lead to several more surgeries, pain, rehab, missing school, and all the other fun things that come with his surgeries. Then he showed me this website for Innovations Gate Clinic in Colorado Springs and tells me about the work they’re doing with patients like my kid using non-invasive technology. It’s perfect how it all fell in my lap. It felt like the Universe was finally giving me a break from my misery. I talked to Christopher about the clinic after we got home and showed him the information. The next morning, he told me he wants to visit the clinic before he decides. I make the arrangements and we fly out on my next days off. We sat in the parking lot after the tour and consultations, and he tells me he’ll do almost anything to avoid more surgery even if it means leaving his Bucky and his friends for a while.”
Eddie stood and stretched his back and shoulders, which had gotten stiff from sitting in one place for so long.
“That kid still amazes me every day. We did good with him, Buck.”
“He called me Pops the other evening. It was one of the most profound moments of my life.”
“After that, I stopped by the CSFD to see what they had available. They tell me about Station 11, a new firehouse of mostly rookies because of their recent expansion, so I have a job, and a clinic for my kid … All I need is a house and school close to Station 11. Pepa found me a house through her contacts, Carla has a sister, Letty, that has a take no prisoners attitude, just like Carla. All we had to do is pack the house and move. By the wedding, everything is arranged except for the school, which we found the first week we were there. Letty is a treasure, the plan was perfect, and you know the rest.” Eddie settled back on the lounger exhausted. Buck reached for his hand, needing the contact to keep him grounded.
“Of all the times people at the station stick their noses in my business, and no one said a word.”
“Bobby was the only one who knew I was leaving. That was only because of the transfer paperwork that crossed his desk. I told him and Athena after you left the reception. I told him he could share my contact information with anyone that asked. You and Hen were the only ones that asked or the only ones that visited other than Bobby and Athena. They brought the kids to visit at least once a year. I never told anyone I was in love with you, but we can’t seem to hide anything from Athena.” He leaned into Buck.
“I’m so sorry, Eds.”
“It is what it is, Buck. I should have fought for you …Told Taylor to go fuck herself, instead of taking a step back, except I wouldn’t change what Innovations Gate has done for Christopher. If you had just once indicated that your feelings for me were more than brotherly/best friend, I would have asked you to come with us. Will and Chano were and are great partners, but never as good as us.”
Looking at his watch, Eddie was pleased to see he’d have time for a nap before going to meet the Team for training.
“Eddie, I want this to work. I didn’t realize how embedded we were in each other’s life until my first shift after we got back from the honeymoon. I reached out waiting for you to hand me something and Lucy looked at me like I was crazy.”
“Aaron and I talked about how once all the posturing was out of the way, it was like we had always known each other. He reminded me that no matter how well we know each other, and read each other’s body language, we still need to use actual words that form sentences. That’s where we screwed up.”
“I was in a session with Dr. Copeland when she asked me how my relationships had changed since my divorce. I was close to a panic attack when I realized I hadn’t talked to you since I was at your house when Chris was a junior in high school. She pretty much told me the same thing Aaron told you. At least once a week I’m talking to Chris, who talks about you and the people I met while I was in Colorado Springs, but he never puts you on the screen.”
“Because you didn’t ask. He put two and two together and thought it added up to you didn’t want to talk to me. For two fairly intelligent adults, we suck at relationship basics.”
“Truth. Think we can work on that problem together?”
“Yeah, but right now, I’m exhausted, and I have training tonight, so I’m going to take a nap for a couple of hours. You can stay, use the pool, whatever.” Eddie felt wrung out as a wet dishrag. There was no energy left for anything other than finding his bed.
“Can I lay down with you? I think we’ll both be better with a nap.” Buck gave him puppy eyes.
“Your version of puppy eyes doesn’t work nearly as well as Christopher’s, but you’re welcome to nap with me.” Eddie gave him a tired smile. “Let me pull the truck out on the driveway and lock the gate.”
It was a matter of ten minutes both men were changed into comfortable clothes and stretched out on Eddie’s king-size bed. He set an alarm because he would never live down the teasing if he overslept. The warmth against his back had him drifting into a restful sleep.

Grunts, moans, and the sounds of bodies hitting the floor were the only sounds in the gym. Four members of Team 7 were drenched in sweat and gasping for breath as they lay stretched out on the mats.
“It’s a good thing Teal’c’s not here. He’d have that look on his face that shows how pitiful we are.” Faraday groaned.
“You two should be in the best shape. You’re not working a second job, so have the most time to work out.” Chano complained.
“We’re also older than you two jóvenes.” Vasquez reached down to pull Joshua to his feet.
“Who would have thought the only thing to bring down the Magnificent 7 would be age.” Eddie began doing cooldown stretches. “Might not hurt to spend at least one of our days off at Los Alamitos. Wouldn’t want the real youngsters laughing at us when we go to Coronado.” He chuckled as he bent over to touch his forehead to his knees.
Walking past the gym on his way back to his office, Bobby stopped to watch the two men working out. When he’d gone to Colorado Springs to coax his former probie back into the fold of the 118, he had crossed his fingers and said a prayer to St. Jude that it wouldn’t be a lost cause.
Seeing the two men’s personal and professional relationships getting back on track after the derailment that was Buck’s marriage to Taylor Kelly, gave Bobby’s spirit a little extra kick that the man he loved like a son was finally finding happiness. Having Eddie and Christopher back in the fold at the 118 made the family they all chose feel more complete.
He watched until the men headed to the showers before continuing to his office happy with the thought that everyone was exactly where they were supposed to be.
Turning over a new page on the calendar, Eddie shook his head remembering the Halloween decorations the members of Squad and Truck had scattered throughout the firehouse. All Souls Eve had turned into something of a neighborhood potluck with candy and games for everyone. Most of the calls for their 24-hour shift had been for the ambulances, so they had plenty of time to clean up and get some decent sleep. Having breakfast with his Abuela on the way home meant he was able to jump right into his household chores before heading to the basement to inventory supplies.
Team 7 had completed at least one mission a month since Eddie had moved to California. The retrievals contained items purchased through costume role playing sites that were parts of Jaffa uniforms and non-lethal items such as scanners. Though there was one enterprising thirty-year-old chemist, Lisa Wooden, who acquired a Kara’Kesh and a canister of Nish’tah. Discovering what the Goa’uld drug could do, she used the Nish’tah to randomly kidnap whoever caught her fancy. She kept them drugged and controlled on a small ranch not far from Lake Tahoe. Wooden cleaned out their accounts and credit cards while ordering the ten men and five women to work and turn their income over to her.
Lucky for the Team, she didn’t have the required naquadah in her system to operate the Kara’Kesh, but she was working on reverse engineering the Nish’tah thinking of the fortune she could make controlling the masses. It had been easy to subdue the fifteen men and women at the farm but had taken a minute to decide how to handle the group. Instead of having everyone sent back to Stargate Command, they had brought in SG-2 and SG-5 to handle perimeter security while they set up a makeshift clinic in the barn.
Eddie spent the night working with Dr. Lam and the medical team from the mountain to get everyone cleared of the Nish’tah. The rest of the Team had helped transport the enterprising Lisa Wooden, her lab, and all her notes back to SG command. He’d been thrilled to see Lili, who was now Dr. Lam’s second, and catch up on her and Cullen while they prepared people for transport.
While they were getting a medical scan on everyone, General O’Neill had been taking over a large hangar at Beale Air Force Base. Colonel Davis had his team busy locating the families of the fifteen victims and coming up with a plausible explanation. The only good thing about the situation was no one had put the details of the disappearances together enough to call in someone like the FBI. Tap dancing around the profilers from the BAU was a job he left for Daniel. When it came to obfuscating, no one stood a chance of getting a whiff of the truth when O’Neill threw Daniel Jackson and Paul Davis in their path.
By the time everyone was closed in the hangar at Beale, Team 7 was moving by caffeine and stubbornness. Seeing the four men literally propping each other up where they sat against one of the hangar walls, Jack had them beamed to Eddie’s basement. The team unloaded and secured their weapons and uniforms before stumbling off to bed.
Feeling frantic because he hadn’t heard from Eddie the first two days of their four off, Buck went in search of Christopher. He found the two college freshmen had thoroughly taken over the living room with their books, papers, and computers.
“Heard from your dad?” Buck tried to sound casual as he pulled ingredients out to fix them all lunch.
“Yeah. His team was on a mission. Got the all clear message from him about three this morning, so he’s probably sleeping.” Christopher answered without looking up from his reading.
It was beginning to irritate Buck being inactive reserve, his security clearance had also dropped. The only way he could find out about Eddie’s missions was if he was involved. He was only inactive because he hadn’t seen the need to go through requalification after the fire truck bombing but had never taken the time to get his separation from the Navy. Being in shape for the fire department and being in shape for the SEALs were worlds apart. If he wanted to have Eddie’s back in all aspects of his life, maybe it was time to take the man up on his offer to train with his team.
Figuring Eddie wouldn’t want to skew his sleep schedule, Buck decided calling and inviting the man to supper would be a good thing. Eddie could relax with the kids and not have to worry about cooking. Sending a text in case Eddie was still sleeping, Buck felt a little thrill run through him when he got an immediate and positive answer.
Taking a few minutes to sit on the edge of the bed, Eddie tried to decide whether to sleep some more or get started on after-action reports and clean up. His notifications told him he had a text message that caused a sigh. So, it was door number two. Breakfast for the Team, then paperwork, gun cleaning, and getting uniforms ready to send for cleaning. He woke Billy, started the coffee pot, and then headed to the guesthouse. Bitching about Eddie waking them up, he made sure Vasquez and Faraday were upright before heading back to the house. At least they’d have gone home by supper, so Buck offering to cook made his evening a lot easier. All he had to do was listen to Christopher and Dina talk about their classes and help load the dishwasher after supper.
Heading to the bathroom, Eddie realized he was no longer tired. Maybe this move back to Los Angeles was going to work out.
*^*^*^*
During a lull in the conversation, Buck looked around the patio at the family that seemed to have developed since Eddie and Christopher had returned to Los Angeles. His relationship with Christopher deepened into a true father/son as Buck grew to respect the intelligent young man. Dina was an absolute jewel. She sparkled bright but her sharp edges would cut if you crossed her temper. It was a delight to be around her and Chris and made him realize how much he’d missed having the Diaz boys in his life.
Watching Eddie lean forward to listen to something Dina was saying showed flashes of silver in the dark hair. The elder Diaz had become leaner but stronger as he matured highlighting a face any leading man would give their firstborn child to have. He made Buck think of a lake. Still on the surface, with unknown depths. As the evening progressed, he noticed Eddie beginning to drag. Buck was brought out of his ruminations when Eddie stood from his chair.
“I need to get going. We have a shift tomorrow and I need to catch up on some sleep.” He started for the door.
“You having trouble sleeping?” Buck’s worry meter kicked in. The only thing that kept Eddie from sleeping was his PTSD.
“No. Team had a mission. Not much sleep was had.”
“Oh. I’ve got one more room if you want to stay.”
“I’m good to get home. I need to check my gear for tomorrow.”
He hugged Dina and Christopher before heading to his truck. Buck followed close behind.
“Thanks for inviting me over. Supper was great as usual.” He pulled Buck in for a hug.
“Maybe just the two of us could do something soon.” Buck offered.
“I’d like that.” Eddie gave him a shy smile as he climbed into the truck. “I think I’d like that a lot.” He gave the younger man a saucy wink as he backed out of the driveway.
Throwing himself down on his bed in his office, Eddie’s first thought was he was too tired to take off his boots. His next thought was that he needed to call the curandera that lived near his Abuela to see what had pissed off the spirit world and made this shift seem like a ride on the crazy train.
“Hey, Eds …” Buck barreled through his door with a handful of papers. “Oh, sorry, didn’t realize you were trying to sleep.”
“I hadn’t made that far in the thought process yet, so don’t worry about it.” Eddie sat up to give Buck his full attention.
“I was reading through your Incident Reports, and I had some questions …” Buck plopped down on the bed next to Eddie.
“Why are reading my reports?”
A blush crept up Buck’s neck to his hairline. “Uh, I might be studying to take the captain’s test.” He looked out the corner of his eye for Eddie’s reaction.
“Good for you. Still doesn’t answer my question.”
“I know how to do all the reports except for the paramedics and the captain’s. I figured if I had a head start on the paperwork, I’d have a leg up.”
“What’s your question?”
“This report. What’s the purpose of it? Why don’t I fill something like this out since I’m the lead on Truck?”
Teaching Buck about the various paperwork finally quieted his mind enough that around midnight, Eddie developed a bad case of the yawns.
“Not to curb your enthusiasm, but I think I can finally get a little sleep.”
“Oh … Well … Thanks for taking the time to explain this stuff. I feel a lot better about it now. I’ll just go and … let you get some sleep. I didn’t mean to keep you up.” Buck stuttered as he gathered his study materials.
Laying a hand on the muscular arm, Eddie stopped the verbal spiral before it got started. “You can come to me anytime with your questions. I was just laying here thinking about the future. What I want to do after I’m forced out of the field.”
‘What? You have years before you have to worry about that.”
“What if something happens and I’m injured out? I have the experience and the qualifications, but I’m not one for doing inspections and shuffling papers. Christopher will be set with his degree and job in a year or three. I’ll only have myself to worry about. Maybe go full-time with the military. They need liaison people all over … Travel … Meet new people … Learn things. Listen to me going on when I said I wanted to get some sleep. Want to grab breakfast after shift?”
“What? Oh. Yeah. Sounds good. I’ll meet you in the parking lot after shift.”
Still in a stupor over Eddie’s revelations, Buck felt lucky his office was right next door to Eddie’s. He sat on the edge of his bunk rubbing his hands over his face. He had no idea Eddie was thinking about leaving. He seemed to love being a member of the LAFD, but he’d never asked the man about the life he left behind in Colorado Springs to do Bobby a favor. Buck started thinking about the past few months of their year long relationship. They took turns hanging out at each other’s houses, as well as going out as a couple. Movement forward was slow as they got re-acquainted … Learned how they had changed while they were apart. Eddie tended to shy away from spending too much time at Buck’s house, letting Christopher and Dina have the independence he always wanted for his son. He let the young couple control the amount of contact between them.
Buck tried to contain his enthusiasm over being with Eddie, but maybe he’d stifled his personality too much. There was handholding, and some heavy petting, but neither felt ready to add sex to the mix. Maybe Eddie thought he wasn’t serious. Falling back on his bunk, Buck stared at the ceiling, his thoughts swirling with self-doubt picking out a few things he’d half-assed with Eddie since Christopher and Dina had moved in with him.
After eight years of video calls and brief visits, Buck had just wanted to bask in having Christopher back in his life. For the past two years, he’d done that to the detriment of a few plans with Eddie. Christopher had even called him on it when he’d blown Eddie off one too many times.
Walking into the kitchen he saw Christopher sitting at the island. There was no sign of Dina.
“She went to the store so we could talk.”
“What’s up, Superman?” Buck settled himself ready to listen to the problems of a teen on the cusp of being an adult.
“Are you keeping my dad around because you think I’ll leave if you don’t?”
Buck couldn’t have been more shocked if Chris stood up and danced the tango. “What!?”
“I didn’t stutter, Bucky? If you’re not keeping my dad on a string to keep me around, why do cancel your plans with him?”
“I just want you to be able to do all the things you want. Dina said she didn’t want to go to the lecture this evening.”
“What’s that got to do with Dad? Dina’s dropping me at the lecture before she meets up with some friends down the street from the lecture hall. I’ll meet up with them later.”
“Oh. I just wanted to be sure you got to go to the lecture.”
“I’m a big boy, Buck. I love you but I don’t need you to hold my hand to cross the street. I’m not going to be mad if things don’t work out with Dad.” Chris rubbed his forehead in frustration. “Buck, Dad outranks you. He’s not going to push anything. The same thing happened in Colorado.”
This didn’t bode well for them as a couple. Thinking about it, it was as if there was an invisible line that Eddie wouldn’t cross, and Buck hadn’t invited him over. Just then Chano walked by his office on the way to the bunk room. Captain over a Firefighter. Captain over a Lieutenant. Imbalance of power. Thumping his head into his pillow in frustration, Buck swore that starting tomorrow at breakfast, it would be an improved Evan Buckley that sat across the table from Eddie. He would pass his Captain’s exam to eliminate the rank difference, but what if Eddie was thinking about leaving because Bobby would have another Captain when he passed the exam?
*^*^*^*
By the time breakfast was over, Eddie wanted to check Buck for a zipper to see if he was a pod person. Resting his head on the steering wheel, he tried to figure out how Buck had talked him into hosting a pool party for A-shift during their next four days off. The younger man had been a bit overwhelming but being the center of someone’s attention felt nice. He would be in Coronado for the next three days for Team Seven’s monthly heavy training. A text from Chano on the way to breakfast had let Eddie know the team was at his house packing their equipment. They’d be heading to Coronado as soon as he put his gear in his truck.
Locking the gate behind Vasquez and Faraday, Eddie rested his head against the bars gathering the energy to go inside and find his bed. He’d done a lot of thinking on the drive to San Diego and back. Looking at the way things were going in his personal and professional life, Eddie decided as soon as Buck passed his Captain’s exam he was going to ask O’Neill to send him to Atlantis.
Christopher was settling into adult life which had become everything Eddie always wanted for his son. Great professional options, a woman who loved him and had stood by his side since the day they met. Bobby would have Buck as a Captain, so the 118 was covered … Buck had been waffling between friend and would be lover so hard that Eddie was getting whiplash. With only a few emotional ties left on Earth, he could see no reason to stay. Stripping off his clothes, he climbed into bed. Tomorrow was a full moon, so he expected A-shift to be busy.
Sending off the last of his paperwork to Bobby’s Admin, Eddie was headed to the apparatus bay to check on his crew’s progress on equipment maintenance and fully stocking extra parts and pieces, just in case.
“Eddie.” Buck came chasing after him from the common room.
“Yeah, Buck?” He kept walking.
“You got a minute to help me with something?”
“Sure. Just let me check on Squad, and I’ll be right there.” He never stopped moving even as he answered Buck’s question.
“I’ll just wait right here.” Buck was a little confused by Eddie’s cool demeanor.
He knew Eddie had spent their days off in San Diego. He wondered if something happened that Eddie couldn’t talk about. Reminding himself that he was going to do better by their relationship, he gave himself a mental shake and went back to the common room.
“Eddie give you the brush off? I can try to help.” Hen offered.
“He did NOT give me the brush off. He was in the middle of something and will be here as soon as he’s finished.” Realizing how that sounded, Buck softened his tone. “Thanks for the offer.”
“Do you find it kind of odd that after all the time he’s been back, he still seems a little standoffish.”
“He’s the Captain now.” Buck turned his full attention on the paramedic. “Bobby wasn’t shooting pool and playing video games with us when he was Captain … Why are you giving Eddie grief? You did the Captain thing for five minutes when Bobby was on vacation, you got a taste of what it’s like.”
Hen looked away at the intense blue stare. “You’re right. I guess I froze Eddie at the place he was when he left. I don’t really see Captain Diaz when I look at him.”
“Well, you better start seeing it. Between the Army and the fire department …” Buck shook his head. “I’ve met Captain Diaz and Chief Warrant Officer Diaz, and he can make the biggest hard ass look like a pussy cat.”
The two were so engrossed in their conversation, they hadn’t heard Eddie approach. “Good advice, Lieutenant Buckley. Now that I have some time, what can I help you with?”
“Can we go to your office?”
“Sure. Oh, Wilson, I think Han was looking for you. He’s in 118A.”
“Thanks, Captain.” They started toward Eddie’s office. “Eddie?”
“Yeah, Wilson?”
“Why do you do that?”
“What?”
“Call us by our last name?”
“Habit. That’s how we did it at my old station, and on my military team.”
“But you always said you wouldn’t answer to Diaz.”
“I don’t. I answer to Captain or Chief Diaz depending on if it’s the firehouse or the military. I’ll even answer to Eddie when people are forgetful.” He gave Buck a knowing grin. “You should go find out what your partner wants.” He cut off any more questions by turning back toward his office.
Hen stared after the two men before giving herself a mental shake and going to look for Chim.
“Now that I’ve distracted Hen, how can I help you?”
“I want you to get back to active status.”
Raised eyebrows was the only sign of Eddie’s surprise. “You’ve never shown any interest in recertifying.”
A blush climbed up Buck’s neck. “I didn’t have the incentive. I want to be able to have your back if you need it.”
Eddie felt a flair of hope at Buck’s words. Maybe this meant Buck was ready to move things along with them, too. He was beginning to think Buck only kept him around for Christopher. Shaking his head to dislodge his insecurities. He turned his attention back to Buck.
“I know you’re using my house for a pool party our second day off, but the other days we work. We’re going to Los Alamitos on days three and four. I’ll see if I can find some BDUs for your long-assed legs.”
“All I need is a time and place.” Buck promised.
Before Eddie could say anything else the bells rang.
